A charming picture of our stall manned by the finest experts in the business. A bunch of boozehounds, loud mouths and twee pop affecianados taken by the leader of the pack, our rosette slingin' chum Heather. We regret nothing.

We also saw Remember Remember play with Mogwai. They gave out Rock Action samplers and the RR track is simply beautiful. Heres something new.

We're currently attatching tapes to zines to be ready to be sent out into the world. We'll have an online distributor and stockists all over very very soon. Thanks again to everyone who's been in touch since the zine symposium/looked at our stuff on the web/enjoyed a zine they bought.

We dropped quite a few dollars on zines at the symposium and some of our favourites are more than worth a mention here! First up is anything made by the loveley hands of Heather Willams who's rossetes, zines and badges adorned our stall, but were some of the best things at the show and sold loads. Her What Do You Do zine is a technicolour collage of different contributors ideas/thoughts/feelings. Really, really wonderful. Check her out at mynameisheather.co.uk right now. Sing A Rainbow by Gethan Dick was found nestled amongst a handful of nice zines, a collection of life writing based on colours of the raindow, printed on coloured paper, wrapped in card and bound with string in an edition of paper. A charming set of memories and experience that is really well written and looks absoloutley great. Get it at gethan.org. Tenement Publishing's first zine is University, another perzine that feels all warm inside and delivers naive, scared, enlightening adventures as the title suggests. Lots of content that holds several gleaming, wonderful sentences that set the writing apart from a lot of personal efforts. Email eforelizabeth@gmail.com. UK Zine Yearbook 2007 is a total must have that was picked up from the excellent Dead Trees And Dye stall. Big ol' compendulum of articles, recipes, rants, raves, proof that the UK zine scene is healthy and alive and offering a feast of different perspectives and ideas. Toby made it and you can buy it from Pete at http://www.deadtreesanddye.com. Notable mentions also to Laura Oldfield Ford and her dark, grim Savage Messiah socio-zines which sketch an honest portrayal of London town. Cynical and angry and here - savagemessiah@hotmail.co.uk. The latest Last Hours is the best we've seen so far. So, so good. They have found a perfect balance of culture and politics. We spent our formative years reading Rancid News and listening to The Filaments and even though we grew out of three chord anarchism, Last Hours continues to inspire and educate. A lot of good artwork, words, view of life in general to be found for cheap, and one issue takes about a month to get through! Essential - lasthours.org.uk. Also found a copy of Braindead issue four at the Punker Bunker in Brighton the other day, very funny, a little bit twisted, good, splodgy illustrations. myspace.com/666braindead.

When you end up getting into a constant pattern of staying up late drinking ale and watching bands or listening to records, life becomes a hazy sprial of 2pm lie ins, too much pizza and no money left. God bless the higher education system. Mogwai at the Southbank Centre were totally incredible. They show no signs of slowing or getting any quieter. They played a lot of new songs which were some of the best yet. Some quiet, some skull crushingly loud, some searing and all encompassing and mesmerising. Dont let anyone tell you otherwise. Like Herod was mind blowing. Thank you once again, Mogwai. Got a great chance to see Thao And The Get Down Stay Down at the Luminaire, which was a quality venue for the blues pop stomper. Thao threw down warm, feel good pop which made everybody smile and dance. Shit N Shine at Corsica Studios was a blast of rhythmic drone intensity. 5 drummers played the same beat for 40 minutes while three guitars threw molten, sludgy riffs from a wall of Orange amps, chaning halfway through to three small keyboards each playing a seperate note, and that note only. Very loud, very hypnotic, left Corsica in a daze, a bubble of sound. Hurt ears, confused brain, big grin. Been a bit late on the No Age tip, but Nouns is excellent. Cant wait for their show with Ex Models next week. Our Sheffield brothers Half A Handshake are putting EM on up north for free. Go see. And with the sunshine comes a throwback, we're rolling and twisting and clapping to The Sonics and Shangri Las and Dillinger right now.

Thats about it. We just found www.manchesterzinefest.org.uk which will be good good good.

More soon.

xxxx

VIDEO DAYS

A nice video of the zine symposium made by Simon of Fever Zine. Since October we've been writing of our upcoming publications, ideas, lots of details that have been delayed and delayed and now, we are pleased to announce, Dans Le Matin is launched!

The symposium was really excellent. The amount of stalls, people, magazines, pieces of art was amazing. Apparently 750-1000 people made it through the doors and we're not suprised. It was packed all day. It was very interesting to watch people browsing, buying, viewing our hard work and appreciating it. Thank you to everyone that stopped by our stall, picked something up, said hello. We were between Corndog and What They Could Do They Did who were really awesome. The whole day was reason to believe in zines/self publishing/DIY culture. A whole range of people turned up to enjoy the day, and as someone said on Collective Zine, it really was nice to see art kids and punk kids in the same space, sharing ideas and proving that there is a thriving zine scene in the uk.

Wine N Zines Mobile Distro also made its first appearance, getting through four bottles of fine sparshop white, many beers from the awesome little pub up the road and many bagels. We were joined by the excellent Heather and Owen, which was a pleasure and an eye opener as they bought some good zines to the table!

We've got three zines out. You can see pictures of them up here and on our myspace. They will be available to buy via paypal and in stockists up and down the country very, very soon.

More zines and news soon!

x

PINS AND NEEDLES!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_g0H09MScDU4/SAzd_MlIFdI/AAAAAAAAAGg/Am9Ic7FJ8JA/s320/tony.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5191768548229780946" />

The symposium is coming and so are we! Our Dans Le Matin/Wine And Zines Distro stall will be stocking our first three releases, paper goods, art things and pretty prints by a whole host of others, including our good friends Owen Richards (owenrichards.co.uk) and Amy Martin (http://www.fifzine.com/fifzine/artists/amyamyamy). We've got some wall space, a three foot table and a ton of wine. Its going to be a good day! Come say hello, we're flogging zines for cheap and giving out badges, flyers, big smiles and cups of cheap red for free. Well worth a stop over at the Rag Factory in East London on Sunday 27th from 12pm til 6pm.

We're currently putting the finishing touches onto our debut publications. They are all about Love, Twee Pop, Polaroids and Junk Mail. If we say anything more we'll surely jinx ourselves such has been our luck lately! Pictures and mailorder after sunday for sure.

Keep it roots reggae, real ale and photocopiers!

X

LONDON ZINE SYMPOSIUM!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_g0H09MScDU4/R-fj2pm6CDI/AAAAAAAAAGY/fjdYgbPRjT0/s320/polaroid8.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5181360424334526514" />

We are delighted to announce that we will have a stall at this years London Zine Symposium. Studying, reading, drinking, travelling, studying, time wasting, drinking, records. It kind of blurrrrrs into one big where am I and before you know it there isnt any time to get on and make zines. So as usual, our plans have jinxed us, deadlines will be long lost and forgotten, we're just going to have to see what happens.

We're beavering away on our little project, slowly but surely things are starting to happen. Matt ordered some badges, I completed a booklet of polaroids, both of us have been searching away for bands to put on tapes and we've got our first two cassette releases sorted. Patience, patience, patience. Things will start to materialise soon!

In the meantime, here is a little round up of whats been going on. I saw Action Beat play last night in a loveley little pub somewhere in Dalston and they were phenominal. They played with four guitarists and three drummers and ruined my ears. Their set was a short blast of gigantic riffs and static and loud, loud, loudness. So much rhythm, energy, sweat, sound dripping from the ceiling splashing all over the place couldnt move only dance dance dance away. Good beer on tap too, always trust a place that pours Pilsner Urquell into slender glasses like hoppy gold! If you take one tip from some guy that writes a blog on his laptop in the middle of Surrey take this - Action Beat. Matt and the Half A Handshake crew are putting them on in Sheffield on the 7th of February, mega line up here.

For inspiration, this week is the new Shit And Shine record with its many sounds and sonic experiments, an excellent article in the February issue of Wire about the Baltimore noise scene that only mentions Dan Deacon once and make me want to fly straight over and freak out, dancing at Bethnal Green Working Mens Club to cheap n sleazy rock n roll then hearing a legendary Alan Price tune, starting to get ideas and lots of 'em, Jean Prouve at the Design Museum, Owen Richards just updated his website and has taken some brilliant shots of David Thomas Broughton for Plan B (who seem to have just discovered him - our man Matt was on it over a year ago - anyone want to employ us???) and not getting much much sleep.

It seems that the Rant Magazine website has been taken down. Myself and Matt both contributed a little to it. I dont know where its gone, but assume its for definate. Here are a few snippets from some of the reviews I did for the website...

Passions at The New Cross Inn

‘For the dreaming, the drowning and the drunk’ reads part of a huge stencil painted onto the back wall of the New Cross Inn, a six foot ship smashed clean out a glass bottle in a white on black salute to hardy booze hounds and tipsy idealists alike. And we’re all here tonight, its midweek in this tiny, shabby, charming place. There’s middle aged men staring vacant propped up on bar stools and kids looking good milling around, far too few for a party, its near empty and not just because of the smokers standing grouchy in the cold outside. But here are the dreamers, you can see a couple, conversations stopped, now just wide eyes for Passions who appeared with ‘Emergency’ sometime not so long ago on the Kitsune label, a single dropping like fizzy electro gold dust, kind of like sherbet back in the day all bursting with everything you ever wanted to taste, a fine sugar rush stomp that was also one of the finest tracks on the fourth compilation from those cunning French trend setters. What sounds like a band on record appeared on stage as one super skinny fella stooped over a laptop, arms like strawberry laces working double time to punch out electroclash that rushed out and filled the room with jolts of mutant techno. Heavy, abrasive, jarring, obnoxious, rib snappingly feel good dance music that you crave for all week in between pod casts and trips to the record store, rushing through the tube high on cheap wine and suddenly there it is come crashing down, this new sound that twists and snarls and makes your hair stand on end. The pub can hardly contain it, a barrage twice as loud as the DJ’s before, students fleeing the noise, an apple mac propped up by a crooked wooden table Passions working whatever’s on the screen totally destroying it. We look on in disbelief, disappear into the end of the night, fall asleep on double decker busses totally content.

Cronica Label Showcase (Atlantic Waves Festival) at the ICA

Saturday night Trafalgar Square is a swirl of energy. Stand in the middle and feel the whole world revolve around you on that one spot. It feels huge and majestic as the people and the traffic and the tall buildings collide in a constant rush. There’s a hint of electricity in the air that only comes once darkness descends at 5pm and the whole city becomes illuminated. Hurry through Admiralty Arch and stare at the underside of its big beamed belly, find the Mall that stretches all the way up to the hard iron gates of the palace. But take a while. The trees here stand proud, foliage heaped in orange on the side of the pavement. Street lamps sing sweet light out into the night. The architecture seems vast. It’s still ok to wear a light jumper, because it is dry and magical out.

And here we are, the masochists of sound. We sit patient and brave and feel @C, Aki Onda, Gert Jan Prins and Lia construct a sonic landscape from behind computer screens. A projection flickers schizophrenic like a broken television set as we are lead by the hand into a sparse, visceral field. It begins minimally, waves of short circuit bass spread spine tingling fuzz across the room, broken beats fall in abstract, unpredictable patterns, electrodes spring forth suddenly and zap, dart, twist themselves into frantic angles and are gone, raw slashes of sound cut through the ether the way a great swordsman would strike an enemy. Suddenly we are enveloped in a dense terror, as the noises get louder, harsher. Static starts to shake the building, massive bangs erupt into splinters long enough to be arrows, no instruments can be seen, just the pioneers of some great expedition stood concentrating, their faces gone apple mac blue, their eyes wide, bloodshot. It soon becomes a blend of fearsome noise; the harsh rumbling of electronics that feels like pure bliss. It whips the breath away. It scrambles the mind with something never experienced before. Pure improvisation. The twists and turns and simple beautiful balance.

Darren Hayman And The Secondary Modern LP

Clasp this record to your heart and let it melt, let these love songs simmer and envelop. Hayman’s awkward voice singing clever and funny above tinkling banjos and ukuleles, mad fiddles and triumphant horns. His acoustic guitar always strumming constant. And there’s more too, if you listen hard enough. Let the beginning of a smile turn into a grin and remember being a child, a teenager, an adult that can’t quite grow up. Daft but true, this twee, life affirming sound Hayman has been producing for years is still irresistible.

Fuck Buttons at Kentish Town Forum ( ATP Release The Bats)

Fuck Buttons are playing as we enter, our snarls drowned by the unholy noise they create. Pockets of people stand around open jawed, eyes wide in terror. Others descend into a demonic trance and sway in the waves of static. Onstage, two men face each other, bowed over laptops, toy microphones, all sorts of knobs and buttons. The air is alive with electricity, pure and sharp like huge lightning cracks caught on tape and played over and over again. The ground shakes and ribs rattle. Huge hail stones of noise rain down from above. It’s nothing and everything all at once. Imagine being caught in a television snow storm; scared, frightened, trapped and totally alive. One of the men starts to drum a shamanic rhythm, an electronic beat kicks in, synth riffs glide beautifully into the air, creating such wonderful chaos that they could have closed the show there and then.

Thao - We Brave Bee Stings And All

Here is a record for the darkest depths of winter, when only a bright spark will do. Thao delivers it perfectly, a set of songs simmering in a cosy atmosphere of colour and optimism, energy too. Her lyrics and delicate arrangements come across oh so strong and resonant. When she sings the line “It soothes you like a lick of ice cream”, It becomes clear that Thao will be the toast of the New Year. The one to drag us through a raw December and out the other side, safe and sound, re-emerging beneath fireworks in a starry sky on the last day of the year, leaving us no choice but to embrace her sparkle, charm and hope.

Matt's latest website update is also well worth a look, the picture he did of Efterklang for Rant is on there too.

Thats it. Zines soon soon soon.

Thanks for reading, more to come.

Seb

xx

THE GLOCKENSPIEL OF HELL

Matt and I have finally started to get the ball rolling. Dans Le Matin is coming soon, sooner than the last time we told you and sooner than the time before that. The end of January and the start of February will see the emergance of some zines. The first, as before, then changed, now back will be LOVE, which is an acknowledgement of all things excellent. Then an A6 booklet of polaroids entitled Goodbye Airport, Hello Sky will follow. In the pipes is FOOD, an A5 zine all about our favourite ingredients, with guest recipes and a compilation tape perfect for kitchen boomboxes, there will also be an A6 booklet taking on the heaps of junkmail that have fallen through our letterbox ever since we can remember. We've managed to strike up a friendship with a very exciting, super twee gang of uke swinging pirates, details of which will come very soon. So what we're trying to say is, end of the month!

Less talk, more work. But before we dissappear back into our laptops, photoshop bound with an ever growing fear of square eyed syndrome, let us recomend Pissed Jeans, Tristan Tzara (still), a half hour Fuck Buttons jam that Matt pulled from nowhere that is a visceral blast of screeches, wails and heavy distortion and the never ending awesomeness of The Quiet Life, who have actually just released a new tee shirt that bears an uncanny resemblance to the illustration of an old polaroid camera that Matt drew and is at the top of this page. Our version is about a year old. Great pencils think alike. Check it out...

...So thats it. Expect high quality paper goods very shortly. They will be cheap and wholesome. We've got a bunch of good songs to play to you too. We're excited. Let us know if you want to hook up and drink some wine, swap some zines and talk good things.

Seb
xx

A SCREECHING PHONOGRAPH RECORD

So here's 2008. I always become a little more sentimental at this time of year, due to reflecting back on the year that just passed, the over indulgence of new years eve and the cold outside. So there goes 2007. Better get a move on and make some zines.

Just a quick one to let you know we are crawling out from our warm, snug, fairy lit Christmas blanket. We're reaching for cameras and note pads and some spare change for the photocopier. First zine will most likeley be a booklet dedicated to polaroids (one of the pictures is above). The images were taken over a period of two years at different locations around the south of England. The zine will be made up of graph paper, card, tissue and string, with a badge to make yr brand-new-off-the-sale-rail knit wear all the more awesome. It wont cost a lot and should make a few people happy as long as our man Matt gets the photocopy levels just right!

We all got together for a mean curry just before Christmas. The boys from the north brought me a fine yorkshire ale in return for a mammoth quorn korma! It was nice to sit around a table and talk talk talk over mango chutney and lemon rice. Our food zine should be done in a while. Watch out for a whole lot of ingredients love, some guest recipes and a cassette with some really good bands on.

We'll hopefully be showing up at some gigs in the spring. There are a few dates we have our eyes on, so watch out for some zine clutching winos near you soon! We are nearly, nearly ready to present our first zine. The end of '07 means something new in '08, and here is what we have planned...

A6 zines dedicated to Polaroids and Junk Mail, A5 zines all about Love and Food and Travel and Heroes, an assortment of pin badges created for the sole purpose of increasing knitware awareness, a set of flyers that look more like pocket sized pieces of art and a whole lot of cutting, sticking and the second Manfest at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds in February. We are also compiling a mixtape of glorious sounds to accompany one our zines, hopefully the first in many musical digressions!

Everything will be limited, cheap, well made, lovingly packaged and available in our favourite shops or direct straight to your letter box. So thats the plan, we are going to put pens to paper over christmas and get some real work done.

January is where its at!

DLM x

THEY SHOULD HAVE JUST NOT SAID ANYTHING THEN NOONE WOULD HAVE KICKED UP A FUSS‏

Hell I'm hungover to but happy today. Had the dirtiest night in a long time. Here's how the story goes: Started by taking a girl to a kebab shop in search of quick eats and discovered the joy of Turkish pizza, a jalepeno attack on the senses countered by waves of parsley and chicken on top of a doughy base. It took ages to make but was worth the wait. We hit Catch in east London, a loveley, stinky dive of a boozer, spent too much money on beers and rocked out to some sweet noise. Hands On Heads played and were the good days of Help She Cant Swim reincarnated without the hipocrisy or the irony, just straight up boy/girl/riff/synth fuzz. Trencher knocked us for six, I've wanted to see them for a long time and its been worth the wait since I got the Esquilax split many moons ago. I thought they were genius in huge mangled bass, drums, charity shop casio form. Sexbeat done good, thanks for the posters too. It all ended in the beigel shop with stella watching all the late night characters come and go. Tuna and cheese is best.

Anyway, Dans Le Matin is finally established. My man Matt is shooting his mouth off from the deepest depths of Sheffield, so here's a southern perspective for you. I don't think we're going to get a zine out before christmas, so we're just updating the blog every so often and keeping things moving slowly. We're letting everything simmer in an attempt to get our first publication just right. We've got ideas shooting out all over the place right now; we're thinking a food based zine, a few poems, some photographs, who knows? Once it gets going, it will be good.

I got the new That Fucking Tank single today. From the snippets on the web I thought I was going to be quietly dissapointed. Turns out I shouldnt have doubted James and Andy and now Giles, becuase the two new tunes are awesome! The seven comes in heavy picture disc form and sounds rifftastic. I also found a Disco Drive album for three quid in the Pure Groove sale today. Excellent.

The polaroid is a snap from this years Bestival, one of the few summer festivals to still deliver musical epiphanies. Good, sunshine times.

Tips for right now - keep spending too much money on records, eat more spinach, show the people that don't dance how its done.

Seb x

HAPPINESS UP NORTH

So now I have my own log-in and all that stuff, I'll smash out another post for all 'a y'all, and give you a run down on how busy and tired yet happy and optimistic the Dans Le Matin club are.

From previous projects the zines and goodies we have left are running out fast, anything we've done in the past will not return so once its gone...its gone. You can also buy some bits from Half A Handshake shows and if you're very quick get in touch with us direct through me or him .

Tonight I'm lucky enough to be hitting Manchester with some lovely lovely lovely people to see one of the last Electrelane shows, it should be awesome if the Sheffield show a month or so back is anything to go by. Friday night sees me and the Half A Handshake gang going off to Manchester again to see northern girls Hotpants Romance kick ass for what I'm lead to believe will be an incredibly hard party. Then saturday takes us to The Red House in Sheffield for Coughs And Sneezes Spread Diseases put on by the Lola girls.

I dare say sunday will be a day of big duvets, hot and sour soup, Neutral Milk Hotel and talking jibberish. I've just crawled away from a cracker of a weekend and I thought i'd stick up something I've completed recently for a day going ahead in Sheffield that Half A Handshake are putting on with their super nice friends Lola and The Cartwheels. Its on the 8th December and will be better than your life. Bands are still being confirmed and it's picking up some momentum, so keep your eyes on it.

I'm going to be posting on here regularly now, I'm starting to pick up the felt-tip pens again, a big DamnSeaLegs update is long overdue, and you wouldn't believe how excited we are about LOVE and some other projects in the pipeline.

Right now it's all about wine glasses full of cider, musical girls, graph paper, soup and rock 'n' roll fun!

Matt xx

KILLER CLUB SANDWICH

The project is starting to move on a little more, a little quicker, a little inspiring due to the emails that are being pinged back and forth. We've decided on the themes for the LOVE issue, our debut zine, we're going to be writing and illustrating early morning, late night adventures, the crackle of heavy, black vinyl and the genius of David Thomas Broughton, amongst other things. We want the first issue to be optimistic, full of the small details that make life so interesting and colourful, just imagination and a little bit of something abstract printed onto white paper that smells nice, wrapped up in card ready for curious eyes.

We have some other zines planned already, they will be dedicated to Messages In A Bottle, Heroes, Travel and Spontaneity. Maybe some polaroids. Who knows? Thats the beauty if you keep it cheap, limited and hand crafted. Anything could happen. And thats why even though we stopped listening to punk rock and even though Ian Mackaye has kind of dropped off our radar, we know plain and simple that DIY is the purest form of creativity.

Here's a polaroid from London town, taken on a grey day, of grey objects, but still exciting. Look and feel the steady pour of people cascade from everywhere and taste the 2am beigels.

We're pretty much feeling the latest Lo Fi Fink single, 'City', becuase it's in love and reminiscent and looking ahead, and also the last side of the Zidane album when Mogwai delve deep into their psyche and spill out this freedom of imagination in the form of pure wonderful noise like they haven't done in years, and then there's that time we danced to Black Lips with a swagger in our step, cheap drunk on bad cider. Thats whats inspiring us right now.

DLM x

THE COLD, THE DARK, THE NEW

We don't have a website becuase the only one of us that had Dreamweaver changed computers and lost their hallowed website making software. So this is where it will start. Our very own blog! Each post will come with a polaroid, in an attempt to celebrate the medium and to remind us to take more. We love polaroids, they are the best way capturing a moment, only a simple moment, but a square frame filled with shape, colour and life. And its right there, drying in your pocket, waiting to be stuck into the album back home.

We haven't published anything yet, but our first issue is set. DLM001 will be Love. A zine dedicated to the things we love. Stupid things like morning, spring, knitwear, good sandwiches, cassettes and sensible things like music, record players and European beer. It will be available soon soon soon.

Dans Le Matin was formed becuase the projects we were in before came to a close when we all moved away from where we were based. Friends left for study, jobs and travel, and things dispersed. We're now settled back down and ready to do something. We want to produce high quality zines, on nice, heavy paper, that feature idealistic writing, illustration and photography. Everything we produce will be cheap, limited edition and made with care and attention. Zines are a true symbol of DIY and soul. And thats how we like it.

The polaroid for the date 14/11/2007 was taken at least a year ago, at one of the arcades in a sea side town back home. It was one of the last nights before a good friend left for university, and we drove down to the beach to watch the sun go down. We listened to Hefner in the car, and then ventured into the bright lights and zappy noises of slot machine heaven. We started to take photos of all the old people pumping their copper coins away, the flash would hit them square in the face, they'd look a little startled for a momment and then go on back to their game, unfazed that their photograph had just been taken.

More updates soon. You've probably just come from our myspace, but the address is http://www.myspace.com/danslematin. If you're bored of reading about how much we love zines check out some other stuff we are involved in, like http://www.myspace.com/halfahandshake or http://www.rant-magazine.com/.

We're working hard and are inspired by Fuck Buttons, Kraftwerk, Settlefish and cheap cider right now.

DLM x
